The Office of the Planning Regulator has asked the council to scrap plans for a new multi-storey car park in Killarney.
The State’s planning watchdog made the call in a submission on a proposed variation to the Kerry County Development Plan 2022-2028.
The Office of the Planning Regulator says its submission relates to the provision of a multi-storey car park in the town.
The OPR said this proposed variation states there is sufficient car parking within the town based on current provision, as well as the development of an additional 139-car parking spaces in Green Lawn.
This Green Lawn car park was given the go-ahead by Killarney councillors last week; Cllrs voted to remove vehicular access onto Mission Road from the plans, this passed by four votes to three.
In relation to a new multi-storey car park in the town, the office adds that it’s concerned that developing this facility is not consistent with national and regional policy objectives to improve air quality, to integrate land use and for sustainable transport.
The State’s planning watchdog says the planned multi-storey car park should be omitted and that parking options identified in the Local Transport Plan (LTP) should be implemented.
