The Office of Public Works has signed a lease which paves the way for a long-awaited playground in West Kerry.
Comharchummann Dhún Chaoin obtained planning permission and secured funding to progress a playground at An Cheathrúin.
Today’s announcement has been welcomed by Kerry TDs, Minister Norma Foley, Minister of State Michael Healy-Rae, and Pa Daly.
Comharchumann Dún Chaoin had approached the OPW with a proposal to develop a community playground in the surroundings of the Blasket Centre, or Ionad on Bhlascaoid.
The Dún Chaoin Co-operative says in 2021, the OPW agreed to lease the land subject to planning permission.
The committee obtained planning permission, raised €40,000, secured additional funding from the LEADER programme, and appointed a contractor.
The total project cost was estimated at €200,000.
The community had hoped that the playground would be ready this summer.
This afternoon, the OPW has signed the lease agreement to hand the site over to Kerry County Council, which will allow the development of a playground for the community in West Kerry.
The playground will be operated and maintained by Kerry County Council in conjuction with Comharchummann Dún Chaoin.
Comharchummann Dún Chaoin was also complimented by local representatives for its efforts in securing the playground.
