A new online interactive story map allows us to find out more about the species that have made the Shannon Estuary a haven for wintering birds.
Kerry County Council along with Clare County Council and Limerick City and County Council have launched the map which is aimed at schools and communities along the Shannon Estuary and anyone with an interest in nature.
The map features profiles of 21 wetland species which are designated as part of the Rivers Shannon and Fergus Estuaries Special Protection Area.
It includes mapped viewing point locations where the birds can be observed in their natural environment and shows the importance of the Shannon Estuary as a wetlands rich in biodiversity.
It’ll also allow us to get involved in citizen science initiatives such as Birdwatch Ireland’s Irish Wetland Bird Survey.
A talk on waterbirds and wetlands of the estuary will take place at Halla an Pobal, Ballylongford on Sunday, February 1st at 2pm.
