Nearly €630,000 granted for six marine infrastructure projects in Kerry

Nearly €630,000 (€628,080.75) has been granted for six marine infrastructure projects in Kerry.

The 57 successful Local Authority Marine Infrastructure Scheme applicants nationwide were announced this afternoon.

Nationally, €4.33 million in funding will be distributed under the scheme.

Fenit Harbour and Knightstown both secured the maximum funding of €187,500.

125,000 cubic metres of silt is to be dredged from Fenit Harbour with the funding; while Knightstown is to use its grant to upgrade and replace its mooring system, dyneema and nylon ropes, and connectors along the length of breakwater.

Nearly €85,000 (€84,801.00) has been allocated for a pier lifting crane at Kilmakilloge to help load and unload equipment and catch.

Over €37,000 (€37,029.75) has been granted to Scraggane Pier for the installation of safety measures including lighting and a CCTV system.

Cornigallagh Pier will get €37,500 for safety upgrades like incorporating a sea wall to protect the pier, the installation of fenders to the quay walls, of a safety plinth with railings, and of mooring rings.

Nearly €94,000 (€93,750) is marked for Kenmare Bay to upgrade eight navigation aids and six mooring anchoring points for visiting boats or yachts to tie up securely.

The Department of Agriculture, Food and the Marine will co-fund up to 75% of the eligible project costs, with Kerry County Council co-funding the remaining costs.

Minister for Children, Disability, Equality and Kerry TD Norma Foley, Minister of State and Kerry TD Michael Healy-Rae, Fianna Fáil deputy for Kerry Michael Cahill, independent TD for Kerry Danny Healy Rae, and Fine Gael senator Mike Kennelly have all welcomed the scheme allocations.
