A chess tournament getting underway in Tralee this morning aims to raise funds for Ukraine and set a record.

Ukrainian champion Yunis Barudi hopes to break the Irish record for the highest number of competitors ever taken on by one player.

The current record set on Irish soil goes back to 1977 when a player took on 54 rivals, winning 47 games and drawing seven.

Yunis Barudi who studies at MTU Kerry hopes to compete simultaneously against at least 60 other players.

The event, which is taking place at MTU North Campus, will raise funds for medical rescue vehicles in Ukraine.

The tournament is organised by the Irish Chess Union, NEWKD - North East and West Kerry Development - and MTU.
