Ministers shouldn't take fall for public servants' oversight failures

In Ireland, accountability means firing the minister regardless of who is responsible for the problem.

That's according to the Minister for Arts, Culture, Communications, Media and Sport, Patrick O'Donovan.

He was giving his opinion on the independent Deloitte report into excessive spending on a bike shed at Leinster House.

The minister emphasised that the Office of Public Works (OPW) was not solely to blame, and that the Houses of the Oireachtas were instrumental in commissioning the project.

He believes projects must be critically assessed by those requesting them as well as those implementing them.
