A Milltown farmer is calling for a voluntary milk supply reduction scheme.
Noel Murphy is also chairman of the ICMSA Dairy Committee.
The Irish Creamery Milk Suppliers' Association (ICMSA) wants a scheme that would compensate EU dairy farmers with a fixed payment per litre to voluntarily reduce or stop milk production for a set period.
Milk processors in Ireland and other parts of the EU say they have had to pay farmers less than the cost of production so far this year because increased global milk supply has depressed the market.
Mr Murphy claims this would decrease the volume of milk being produced and, consequently, put a floor under milk prices:
