To help raise awareness about the issue and to improve road safety and visibility among road users, Kerry County Council has begun issuing hi-visibility vests to road users in rural parts of the county. There has been a marked increase in the number of vulnerable road users not wearing high visibility clothing.

That's according to Kerry County Council's road safety officer, Declan Keogh.

He says council workers have received, as well as personally witnessed, many pedestrians, cyclists and scooter-users putting themselves at risk by wearing dark clothes at low light.

Mr Keogh says the council will now distribute free high visibility vests to interested road users:

Declan Keogh began working as Kerry County Council's first ever dedicated Road Safety Officer (RSO) in July 2024.

He was presented with a special recognition award at the Road Safety Awards yesterday, for organising a road safety conference in Killarney this past spring:
