Tralee District Court has been told a man accused of a knife attack in the town is likely to face more charges.
25-year-old Anthony Burke with an address at Arlington Lodge in Tralee, has been in custody since November but can take up bail if he agrees to live outside Tralee.
He appeared in Tralee District Court before Judge David Waters.
Anthony Burke faces a charge of assault causing serious harm to a man in his 30s at Arlington Lodge on Church Street in Tralee on November 10th.
Gardaí have alleged that Mr Burke carried out a violent and frenzied attack with a knife on the other man, leaving him with serious injuries.
At Tralee District Court, Mr Burke’s solicitor Brendan Ahern said he understands further charges are possible, and Judge Waters interjected to say further charges are probable given the allegation.
Sergeant Chris Manton said the Director of Public Prosecutions has not yet issued formal directions, but the DPP has had the garda file for three weeks.
He said his understanding is that the possibility for further charges against Mr Burke is what’s causing the delay with formal directions by the DPP and the book of evidence.
Mr Burke has been in custody on remand since November, but he can take up bail if he abides by conditions which include living somewhere other than Tralee.
Judge Waters said it’s not a very onerous condition for bail if he wants to get out of custody, as he can go anywhere else within the 26 counties of the Republic.
Judge Waters remanded him in custody with consent to bail to 16 April, and agreed to a request by Mr Ahern that the state provide an update on potential further charges on that date.
Judge Waters said he will mark the case peremptory eventually if the DPP doesn’t progress matters, meaning the case would have to be progressed by the state or it would be struck out.
