Long commutes are robbing Munster Technological University (MTU) students of a quality student experience and the full benefit of campus life.
That's according to the president of MTU, Professor Maggie Cusack, who appeared before the Oireachtas Committee on Further and Higher Education yesterday.
She says so many students commuting undermines climate action targets and also has knock-on effects for traffic congestion.
Professor Cusack says land for on-campus accommodation on MTU Kerry's North Campus has already been identified, and could be developed within the lifetime of the government if there funding were there.
She warns that although MTU has the capacity to develop on-campus housing, and consequently doesn't have the expense of buying land, it will still need financial support to develop purpose-build student accommodation:
