New flood mitigation measures in Listowel have been described as an important step in protecting lives.
Minister of State for the Office of Public Works, Kevin Boxer Moran announced over €500,000 in funding today.
Listowel native and Fine Gael Senator Mike Kennelly says flooding remains one of the biggest fears for people in parts of North Kerry.
He says the area has been identified for a major flood relief scheme and that studies for the development are ongoing.
Last November, over 70 properties in Listowel and Kilocrim were evacuated following flooding after what was described as a once in a 150-year-event.
Among the factors cited was the volume of runoff - a combination of rain from Storm Bert and snow melt.
Senator Kennelly described the event as tsunami like; he believes the funding is a stepping stone to alleviate future fears of locals.
Equality Minister and Kerry Fianna Fáil TD Norma Foley praised the reaction of Kerry County Council staff to the flood devastation and their action in getting to this point.
