The Cathaoirleach of the Killarney Municipal District is calling for greater enforcement of laws that regulate sulky-racing.

Martin Grady was speaking after a horse was left badly injured following a sulky race in the town last weekend.

The animal was left in a seriously exhausted state after the incident which occurred on the main Killarney to Fossa road at around lunchtime on Saturday.

The horse has received treatment and is now in the care of the ISPCA.

Independent councillor Martin Grady says what happened on Saturday was cruel and disgraceful.

He says while he’d like to see greater enforcement, he acknowledges that sulky races are hard to police as they are organised in an impromptu manner:
