A Kerry TD who was disqualified from driving for two years says there’s no excuse for his actions.
Deputy Michael Cahill was convicted of dangerous driving after a court heard he was driving at over 190kph on the M8 motorway last March.
He was traveling from Leinster House to a meeting at St. Mary of the Angels in St Francis' Special School in Beaufort when the incident occurred.
In a statement made yesterday evening Deputy Cahill said that he is very sorry and that there is no excuse for his actions.
He also acknowledged "the number of serious and fatal accidents on our roads, the devastating impact these tragedies have on families and the fact that excessive speed is a major contributory factor".
The conviction will be considered by Fianna Fáil's Rules and Procedure Committee, and Deputy Cahill will step back as a member of the Joint Oireachtas Justice Committee.
