A Kerry TD has called for rent cuts and a three-year freeze on further increases, as average rents in the county have risen to over €1,200.
Sinn Féin TD Pa Daly has described average rents of €1,255 as “not normal”, and says that renters are being ripped off.
Figures from the Residential Tenancies Board show rents for new tenants in the county have jumped by over 10 per cent in a year, with existing tenants seeing increases of more than 5 per cent.
The Sinn Féin TD described the rises as unsustainable and said action is needed to support renters.
He says people need relief now, with many unable to save for a home while struggling to keep up with rising bills.
