Kerry strawberry grower hoping horticulture can continue to use peat

A Kerry strawberry grower says he hopes sense will prevail when it comes to peat production for horticulture use.

John O’Sullivan of Sliabh Luachra Strawberries has been producing the soft fruit since the mid-1990s over four acres in Currow.

He uses moss peat to grow the strawberries indoors and once he is finished it is reused as bedding for cattle.

Bord na Móna has confirmed the end of all peat harvesting operations.

John O’Sullivan says the alternative of imported coconut fibre is just as controversial as peat due to the possible presence of chemicals in it:
