A Green party representative is urging Kerry County Council to introduce 30 kilometres per hour speed limits in towns.
The move was to be part of the Government’s Vision Zero campaign, which aims to end road deaths and serious injuries by 2050, and halve them by 2030.
Earlier this year, the default speed limit on rural local roads was cut from 80 to 60 km/h.
Phase two was to bring about the introduction of 30km/h speed limits in urban areas.
Recently, the Department of Transport clarified that the urban limit would be introduced through ‘special speed limit bye-laws’ at local authority level, and not by altering the default speed limit nationwide.
The department says updated guidelines will be issued to councils by the end of September.
Once received, each council must review urban speed limits, hold public consultations, and secure a majority vote from elected members before changes can be made.
