A Kerry councillor has defended the idea of strengthening links with China amid concerns over human rights issues.
Fine Gael councillor Angie Baily brought a motion to the recent council meeting, calling for a strengthening of relationships with Kerry’s twin towns and countries.
There is a memorandum of understanding between this county and the Chinese province of Zheijang, and Cllr Baily says there is huge opportunity in creating more of a connection with China.
The Fine Gael councillor said the United States is starting wars in other countries and has a leader who uses very abusive language, but this is not called out because Ireland needs the trade.
She says there are a lot of things which China does right.
