Kerry community first responder scheme attends 2,500th incident

A Kerry community first responder scheme has attended its 2,500th incident since it was established in 2015.

The 50-volunteer Killarney Cardiac Response Unit is trained to attend certain types of emergency calls in the first vital minutes before the ambulance crew arrives.

KCRU covers the Killarney, Beaufort, Firies, Rathmore and Kenmare areas.

Community First Responders (CFR) are volunteers who respond to cardiac arrest, choking, chest pain, stroke, and basic life support incidents.

They help stabilise the patient and provide the appropriate care like CPR & defibrillation until the ambulance crew arrives on scene to take over treatment.

CFR groups linked to the National Ambulance Service-NAS National Emergency Operations Centre are alerted to an emergency in their area and, as they are community based, can provide medical assistance within minutes of a 112/999 call being received.
