Kerry added the fewest but sold the most social housing units nationally last year

 

Kerry added the fewest, but sold the most, social housing units in the entire country last year.

In 2024, the county council increased its social housing stock by just 0.73 per cent, relative to its opening stock, adding 33 homes.

Kerry County Council also sold 43 social homes last year, the most of any local authority in the country.

These figures were all included in the National Oversight and Audit Commission’s (NOAC) 2024 Local Authority Performance Indicator Report, published today.

This is the eleventh annual report assessing local authority performances against key indicators.

At the end of 2024, Kerry County Council owned just over 4,500 (4,526) dwellings.

The average cost of re-letting a social unit in Kerry was just over 30,000 euro (€30,016.38) across 157 units.

Last year, it spent an average of just over 800 euro (€816.57) per housing unit on maintenance.

Kerry County Council completed the fewest retrofits nationwide, with just 13 social housing units upgraded, an increase from 11 in 2023.

All 13 achieved a BER rating of B2 or higher, with ten of these homes having heat pumps installed.

The report also found Kerry had the second longest average re-letting times in the country.

It took an average of 61.55 weeks to re-let a property compared with a national range of 14.59 weeks in Roscommon to 113 weeks in Louth.
