The jury has been sworn in to hear a trial of a man accused of the murder of an elderly Castlemaine man last year.
67-year-old Thomas Carroll, with an address at Brookway, Clonmel, Co Tipperary, is accused of murdering 84-year-old Patrick Paddy O’Mahony in February 2024.
Mr Carroll pleaded not guilty at the Central Criminal Court which is sitting in Limerick.
Thomas Carroll is accused of the murder of Patrick “Paddy” O’Mahony at a location near Castlemaine, on a date between the 24th and 25th of February, 2024.
Both men had served in the Defence Forces and had a shared interest in firearms and shooting sports, the jury heard.
The trial judge, Mr Justice Patrick McGrath, told the jury that more than 90 witnesses, including investigating Gardaí attached to Tralee Garda Station, are listed to give evidence over the course of the trial.
Mr Carroll is represented by senior defence counsel Mark Nicholas, instructed by solicitor Pat Mann.
The case is being prosecuted by senior counsel Dean Kelly, instructed by State solicitor Jonathan Antoniotti.
The trial is expected to last for between two and three weeks.
