Irish language assistants in Kerry are to get a 10 per cent pay rise.
Minister for Children and Kerry TD Norma Foley welcomed Minister Dara Calleary's confirmation of the pay rise earlier today.
As a result of this increase, language assistants' pay rate will increase to €25.52 per hour from the beginning of the new school year.
The Language Assistants Scheme has also been extended for the upcoming academic year as part of a nationwide package worth almost 2 million euro, at €1.964m.
The scheme, which began in 1992, aims to strengthen Irish as a community and family language by providing language assistants in Gaeltacht schools.
Oidhreacht Chorca Dhuibhne manages the scheme in the southern region, on behalf of the Department of Rural and Community Development.
