An Ireland South MEP has called on the Minister for Agriculture to urgently revise the compensation caps for cattle culled due to TB.
Independent MEP Michael McNamara warned that the current limits are outdated and leave farmers exposed to major financial losses, adding that the scheme no longer reflects the reality of today’s market.
The current cap of €3,000 has been deemed non-sustainable by the MEP, who suggested raising the standard cap to €5,000 and the pedigree cap to €7,000 to better reflect market values, as advised by the Irish Cattle and Sheep Farmers’ Association.
The Independent MEP stated that a more fair system is needed that works for today’s market valuations
