INMO says violence at hospitals not limited to EDs with maternity and paediatric wards also affected

Violence at hospitals isn’t just confined to the emergency departments late at night, such incidents are now also occurring in maternity and paediatric wards.

That’s according to Irish Nurses’ and Midwives’ Organisation general secretary, Phil Ní Sheaghdha who is from Ventry.

She was responding to figures obtained by The Journal into the number of violent incidents recorded in hospitals; there were almost 20,000 nationally between 2023 and 2025.

Over 300 of those incidents of violence were recorded at University Hospital Kerry.

Ms Ní Sheaghdha says anyone that becomes violent, shouldn’t be allowed back into such units:
