The car park at Inch beach will be open as normal for the summer after a last-minute agreement was reached between Kerry County Council and the landowner.
The owner of the land, which is leased to the council, had said he would close the car park from today if an agreement was not reached over the rent.
Mahmood Hussain has leased land at Inch to the council for around 20 years, for what he described as token rent, which the council uses as a car park with between 60 and 70 spaces.
The car park also houses the public toilets, a bottle bank, and is used for storage during the winter.
The lease agreement had expired last December, and Mr Hussain threatened to close the car park altogether from today if no agreement had been reached; he sought a four-fold increase in rent from the council.
He said he was raising the rent partly because he had incurred costs due to court proceedings taken by the council on foot of planning enforcement over a barrier and electrical points on a separate campsite owned by Mr Hussain.
He was told to remove these altogether, but is now going through the planning process for those aspects of the campsite separately with An Coimisiún Pleanála.
Mr Hussain says an agreement has now been reached regarding the car park, meaning it will stay open for members of the public to use for the summer, free of charge.
In a statement, Kerry County Council said it has agreed the terms of the lease for Inch beach Car Park for 2026, and the car park will be opened to the public as normal.
