The owner of a private car park at Inch beach, leased by Kerry County Council, is threatening to close it from Friday (29th May).
Mahmood Hussain has rented his 60-to-70-space car park to the council for the last 20 years, for what he described as a "token rent".
Mr Hussain is now seeking a fourfold increase in rent.
The council uses the land, which is across the road from the beach, for car parking and storing council equipment,.
It has also installed public toilets and a bottle bank there.
Last weekend, Mr Hussain began applying a €5 car parking charge, but now says he will close it entirely as he is concerned by the insurance implications of letting people access the public toilets on his land.
He says he is frustrated by how long it is taking the council to agree a new one year lease, since it expired in December (2025).
Mr Hussain says he is also exasperated at the council's enforcement of planning regulations which is affecting another of his businesses, Inch Beach Caravan and Camping Park.
In a stateme
nt, Kerry County Council said it is aware that parking charges were applied over the weekend, that it is treating this matter very seriously, and that it is examining all available options in response.
