High turnover of childcare staff in Kerry due to low pay

Kerry childcare providers can’t keep staff, because they’re so poorly paid, relative to other educators.

That's according to Early Childhood Ireland, which revealed that Kerry has an average staff turnover rate of 25 percent, which is above the national average.

In their pre-Budget submission, they're asking the Government to bring Early Years and School Age Care graduates in line with primary school teachers, in terms of pay and conditions.

They also want Children's Minister and Kerry TD Norma Foley to give a definite start date for delivering the €200 a month fees for children attending Early Years and School Age Care, as promised in the Programme for Government.

 

Director of Policy with Early Childhood Ireland, Frances Byrne, says it's not good for children that staff in these facilities keep coming and going:
