Kerry’s newest proposed county councillor says creating an environment where young people don’t feel they have to emigrate is a top priority.
Aoife Kennelly has been nominated by the Fine Gael party to be co-opted on to her father Mike’s seat on Kerry County Council in the Listowel Municipal District.
Mike Kennelly topped the poll in the Listowel LEA in last June’s local elections, and then won a seat in the Seanad in February, leaving his council seat vacant.
The co-option of his daughter Aoife, a 28-year-old secondary school teacher, will take place at the next council meeting later this month.
Aoife Kennelly is returning home from Melbourne to take up the role on Kerry County Council; she says the goal is to create conditions for young people to make a life for themselves here in Kerry.
