Gardai have been praised for their quick thinking, following a lunchtime incident in Tralee earlier today in which a 25-year-old man brandishing a knife was arrested.
Ashe Street in the town centre was closed off to traffic for a time, while a Garda negotiator spoke to the man.
He was subsequently arrested; no-one was injured and the street was re-opened a short time later.
Mayor of Tralee Terry O'Brien said while the incident was unfortunate, local Gardai should be commended for their quick response and for the fact that no-one was hurt.
He said today's incident shows the danger that Gardaí are often faced with in the course of their everyday duties.
