The Garda Commissioner says a review has been launched into the police investigation into the murder of Michael Gaine.
Drew Harris was speaking at the Garda College in Templemore at the swearing in of 120 new gardaí.
He says there are definite lessons to be learned from investigations, that were initially treated as missing persons cases, but which were later classed as homicides.
Garda Commissioner Harris says reviews had been opened into the ongoing investigation into the homicide of Kenmare farmer Mike Gaine, as well as the garda probe into the murder of Tina Satchwell.
On March 21st, gardaí launched a missing persons investigation after Mike Gaine’s disappearance was reported to them – he was last seen the previous day.
On April 29th, the case was classified as a homicide and on May 25th, gardaí confirmed that DNA found a week earlier on Mr Gaine’s land belonged to the 56-year-old.
A man who was arrested on suspicion of Mike Gaine’s murder was released without charge last month.
Michael Gaine’s requiem mass will take place tomorrow at 10.30am in Holy Cross Church, Kenmare.
