Five Kerry drinking water supplies were on the EPA’s Remedial Action List at the end of last year.
That’s according to the Drinking Water Quality in Public Supplies 2025, which was published by the Environmental Protection Agency.
The supplies are Minard, Caragh Lake, Listowel Regional Public Water Supply, Lyreacrompane, and Mid Kerry/Gearha.
They serve a population of over 30,500 across the county.
The EPA identified a cryptosporidium risk in the Mid Kerry/Gearha supply; it proposed the installation of UV disinfection and Uisce Éireann proposed a competition date of December 2028 for these works.
The report also says Uisce Éireann estimates a plant construction upgrade for the Mid Kerry/Gearha supply will be completed by the by end of this year, and mechanical installation will take place in 2027.
In Minard a THM, or trihalomethanes, risk was identified and an upgrade of the water treatment plant was required; a completion date for this project is to be submitted by Uisce Éireann.
A THM risk was also identified in both the Listowel Regional Public Water Supply and in Lyreacrompane.
In the Listowel supply, the EPA recommenced an upgrade of the water treatment plant and that project is to be completed in December 2031.
In Lyreacrompane, it was recommended that new groundwater sources be developed and the water treatment plant be upgraded by December 2029.
In Caragh Lake, treatment/management issues were identified and it was recommended that the water treatment plant be upgraded by March of this year.
The report shows a direction remaining open from last year, in relation to THMs in Cahersiveen was closed early this year.
