An emergency accommodation facility is to open in Killarney this month.
Kerry County Council has entered into an agreement with St Vincent de Paul on the provision of the accommodation.
The facility will offer emergency housing for individuals and families from South and Mid Kerry.
It will be reconfigurable to accommodate up to 20 people.
The news was confirmed by Council management at the recent monthly meeting and was widely welcomed by councillors.
There have long been calls for such a facility, as people had to travel to Tralee for emergency accommodation, with some from Tralee then seeking shelter in Listowel.
Several councillors said this had been particularly distressing for children facing long journeys to school.
