The Phoenix Cinema in Dingle is to be repurposed as a not-for-profit arts centre.

That's according to an article in today's Irish Examiner.

It reports that artist Yvonne McGuinness, who together with her husband actor Cillian Murphy, purchased the cinema on Dykegate St in 2024, informed local residents of their plans at the first of three public meetings.

The couple expect the cinema will take roughly three years to repurpose as a venue for films, concerts, community events and workshops.

Locals mounted a three-year campaign to save the venue which shut during the covid pandemic.

The paper reports that, until regeneration funding has been processed in partnership with Kerry County Council, the couple themselves will fund the works.

Ms McGuinness apparently told the gathering that she and her husband are "only custodians" of the Phoenix in an effort to preserve a piece of Irish cultural history.
