A Kerry County Councillor has taken over the running of the post office in Dingle, saving it from the threat of closure.
Fianna Fáil councillor Niall Kelleher has been awarded the contract to run the Dingle Post Office; he also operates a post office at Fair Hill, Killarney.
The previous Dingle operator, Eileen Fitzgerald, tendered her resignation to An Post and the contract was advertised on two occasions before An Post approached Mr Kelleher.
The Dingle Post Office had been based at Fitzgerald’s HomeValue Store on Main Street but it will move location in the coming months.
Cllr Niall Kelleher says a new venue is currently being finalised.
He is calling for the Government to increase the subsidies for running post offices from €10 million to €15 million otherwise he says 40% will close.
