Councillors have voted to proceed with planned safety improvement works at an accident blackspot in Abbeydorney.
Kerry County Council has developed plans for safety works on the intersection between the R556, the R557 and the L2002 in Abbeydorney village.
This junction has been the scene of several collisions.
The plans came before councillors at the recent Listowel Municipal District meeting.
Kerry County Council says the objective of this plan is to improve the junction definition and visibility at the L2002 and R557 approaches, to improve sight distances for traffic exiting the L2002 and R557, to reduce speed through the village and to improve pedestrian facilities in the vicinity of the junction.
It says this is in a bid to address the ongoing issue of collisions at the junction, which has been labelled as “treacherous” by councillors.
A report compiled by the Chief Executive of Kerry County Council Fearghal Reidy came before the Listowel MD councillors.
This included the planned safety works, along with the submissions received from members of the public and national bodies including Transport Infrastructure Ireland and the HSE, following the public consultation period.
12 submissions were received, some were in support of measures like traffic lights, while others called for yellow boxes to be included and others felt some of the measures would restrict parking in the area.
Listowel Municipal District manager John Kennelly recommended councillors to proceed with the proposed development with a minor modification which would include the installation of two yellow boxes at the entrance/exit to the Corrib supermarket.
All Listowel MD councillors agreed that road safety was paramount and aired their views on why they felt this plan was best solution to the road safety issues at the junction.
All councillors voted in in favour of proceeding with the plan.
