A Kenmare Municipal District councillor is urging Kerry County Council to look at modular homes as a solution to the housing shortage.
Fianna Fáil’s Tommy Cahill tabled the motion at the recent full council meeting.
He described modular homes as a viable and sustainable solution, including the zoning of lands and granting of planning permission, to address the crisis.
Cllr Cahill added it’s important the council act on housing, otherwise people who are away saving for houses, will stay away; or those at home saving, will just move away and won’t come back.
In response the council advised it’ll continue to support the use of modern methods of construction for housing projects on a scheme-by-scheme basis.
The motion was seconded by independent councillor, Jackie Healy-Rae, who says many young and elderly people have land to provide the housing solution for themselves, but the one obstacle is planning.
He added that the local authority needs to look at ways to facilitate these people.
