An independent Kenmare Municipal District (MD) councillor is calling for traffic lights to be trialled in the square in Kenmare.
Councillor Dan McCarthy made the call at the recent MD meeting, saying that at busy times it is often a steady stream of people crossing, leaving motorists stuck in traffic as they don’t have the right of way.
He said the existing amber flashing lights, or zebra crossing, should be replaced with a pelican crossing, at which a pedestrian presses a button and waits for the ‘green man’ light before crossing.
Kerry County Council (KCC) officials have agreed to establish if a pelican crossing is acceptable to the TII Safety Section at this location.
Management told Cllr McCarthy that if it is acceptable, the council will have to undergo the formal section 38 process to consider public submissions.
