Kerry County Council has been urged to take action to provide a columbarium wall at a West Kerry cemetery.
Sinn Féin councillor Robert Brosnan tabled a motion at the recent Castleisland-Corca Dhuibhne Municipal District meeting.
He asked Kerry County Council to engage with adjoining landowners at Killiney cemetery in Castlegregory, so that the graveyard could be extended.
In response, the council stated following a review and based on current trends, it’s estimated there are adequate spaces there for a further 7-9 years of burials.
Cllr Brosnan responded that he didn’t accept this, adding the only way this would be possible was if the footpaths there were dug up, noting some graves are impinging on the paths.
He pleaded with the council to approach the adjoining landowners to make provisions to expand graveyard.
The Sinn Féin councillor also requested action be taken to provide for a columbarium wall at the burial grounds.
He claimed that the church in the cemetery has been offered to the council and this would be a suitable location.
Cllr Brosnan says over 30% of burials these days are of urns and there’s no place on the peninsula for such a location; urging to council to consider the Castlegregory graveyard as the location.
