Kerry County Council has said it’s open to exploring the possibility of developing night-time markets in the county’s towns.
Fianna Fáil councillor Tommy Cahill raised the issue at this month’s meeting of Kerry County Council.
Cllr Cahill asked that the local authority engage and collaborate with local groups to develop and pilot a night-time market scheme in the county’s towns.
These groups include town teams, community councils, chambers of commerce, and tidy towns groups.
Cllr Cahill said this would build community pride, support traders, and attract visitors.
In its response, the council said it would welcome continued collaboration with these groups to explore, develop, and pilot a night-time market scheme.
It said this would reflect local needs and opportunities, strengthen the night-time economy, and contribute to the overall vitality of towns across the county.
The council said this would also support local enterprise, enhancing the evening economy, and encourage greater community activity within town centres.
It said meaningful and effective engagement with local stakeholders is essential to the success of these objectives, and achieving vibrant, inclusive, and economically active settlements where people can live, visit, and work.
The council added the development and piloting of a night-time market scheme would also complement the national Town Centre First policy.
