Kerry County Council has granted planning for a new medical diagnostics facility in Manor West, after the applicants could not find a suitable space in the town centre.
Alliance Medical Diagnostic Imaging Ltd has been granted planning permission for the new facility above the Bookshelf Café in Manor Retail and Leisure Park.
The company operates a very busy MRI Unit based on the Bon Secours campus, which traditionally produces in excess of 12,000 scans per year.
As part of the planning process, Alliance Medical Diagnostics Ltd engaged professionals to compile reports on the lack of available town centre spaces for such a facility.
The company wrote there is an urgent need for the establishment of a new centre for x-ray, MRI, CT and DEXA scanning services, as its contract in the Bon Secours is due to end in October.
The council wrote that while its preference is for the applicant to set up in a town centre location, it recognises there is no appropriate town centre premises available that meets its requirements.
In its planning application, the company wrote between 30 and 40 staff will be needed to support this new facility.
