A councillor says it’s unacceptable that some of North Kerry’s most used roads are not priority routes in the winter maintenance plan.

Cllr Michael Foley tabled a motion at the recent Listowel MD meeting for the R551 and R552 to be included in the top list.

The Fine Gael councillor says when cold weather hits, parts of the route between Tarbert to Ballybunion, and Ballylongford to Listowel are treacherous.

Kerry County Council responded that these roads are designated as priority 3 routes in the 2025/26 salting programme.

It added the road won’t be treated as part of the normal winter service, but may receive intermittent treatment.

Cllr Foley slammed the response as unacceptable, adding both routes need to be made top priorities.

The motion was seconded by Fine Gael councillor, Aoife Kennelly.
