A Corca Dhuibhne councillor says the school bus system needs to be looked at.
Fine Gael’s Tommy Griffin was reacting after up to 40 students were left in limbo, prior to Bus Éireann sourcing interim transport to bring students to school.
An email from the company yesterday, informed families in in Maharees and Brandon, that a bus wouldn’t be available for at least a fortnight.
It stated a bus contractor had been sourced, however, it would be unable to begin from tomorrow, and may take a number of weeks to resolve.
Cllr Tommy Griffin praised Bus Éireann for sourcing interim cover to allow the route to operate, but says more needs to be done.
Meanwhile, Bus Éireann says students who are not eligible for school transport, may apply for transport on a concessionary basis subject to conditions.
The company was reacting after more than 15 children in the Duagh area were informed on August 15th that they would not be given a seat on the school bus to Listowel.
A statement says the demand for concessionary seats exceeded the available capacity and it could not facilitate all pupils seeking transport.
Bus Éireann says the availability of concessionary transport may vary from year to year and cannot be guaranteed for the duration of a child’s post primary school education cycle.
