Construction of a new water-based activities centre at Fenit is to begin next month.
Kerry County Council is coordinating the development of the beach facilities, having being granted €1.2 million from Fáilte Ireland’s Platforms for Growth programme.
It is hoped that by investing in infrastructure for outdoor activities, including water sports, this project will extend the tourism season in Fenit to year-round .
Fáilte Ireland says enhancing such facilities will benefit both the local community and the broader economy.
Kerry County Council says the Fenit Beach Facility will be fully wheelchair accessible and built using the best practices in sustainability.
The water-based activities centre will feature hot showers, changing facilities, public toilets, sports equipment wash-down stations, storage lockers, induction spaces, fully wheelchair-accessible amenities, and a ‘changing place’ for individuals with additional needs.
The public realm improvements will include a new public area adjacent to the centre, open paved spaces, raised planters, seating areas, bike parking, and an electric bike charging station.
Additional works will involve the demolition of the existing public toilet block, the implementation of traffic calming measures on the R558, the creation of a new pedestrian crossing, the addition of two fully accessible car parking spaces, the relocation of some play equipment within the existing playground, and improved accessibility to the beach level.
Temporary public toilet facilities will be in place for the duration of the construction.
Ned O’Shea Construction Ltd. has been appointed as the contractor for this project.
Work is expected to begin in April.
Men’s (South) Beach in Ballybunion and Magherabeg Lower in Castlegregory also received funding from Fáilte Ireland’s Platforms for Growth Programme
