Concerns short-term letting bill will further reduce amount of tourism accommodation available

There are concerns that the government’s planned short-term letting bill will reduce the amount of available tourism accommodation.

The bill, published in April, will introduce a register for all short-term lets in Ireland, which will be implemented and managed by Fáilte Ireland from 20th May 2026.

The new policy will also mean new applications for planning permissions for short-term lets in towns with over 10,000 population, which would include Killarney and Tralee, would generally be refused.

CEO of the Irish Tourism Industry Confederation, Eoghan O’Mara Walsh, says there is a shortage of hotels and short-term lets as it is in Ireland.

He says if people cannot find accommodation, this will also impact other businesses like cafes, restaurants, and leisure businesses.
