The President of MTU Kerry’s Students’ Union says there are concerns over the impact rent reforms will have on MTU Kerry students living in privately rented accommodation.
Changes coming into effect on March 1st include six-year security for tenancies, as well as a maximum rent increase of two percent per year, and stricter rules on ending tenancies.
There are protections for student-specific accommodation, but MTU Kerry President Cian McGrath says only about a quarter of their students live in student accommodation.
He says students renting privately in Tralee will face rent increases or their landlord may even choose to sell up instead of guaranteeing a minimum six-year tenancy to students.
Cian McGrath is calling for nine-month protected tenancies for third-level students, and for more student accommodation to be built for the MTU in Tralee.
