The Comptroller and Auditor General (CAG) says the 2023 cyberattack on MTU cost the university €3.5 million.
Seamus McCarthy appeared before the Public Accounts Committee in Leinster House yesterday.
As part of the Comptroller and Auditor General's report, the committee was told Munster Technological University sustained €3.5 million in direct costs responding to the incident.
The university reported the ransomware attack on the 6th Febrary 2023, when it was forced to close its Cork campuses.
While its Kerry campuses remained open, a minority of the data compromised in the breach and made available on the dark web by the BlackCat hacker group, related to MTU Kerry.
Comptroller and Auditor General McCarthy said yesterday that the university received a clear audit opinion, but had a material level of procurement non-compliance.
In MTU's 2022 annual report, it detailed engaging KPMG to review security measures, appointing a chief information security officer (CISO) and introducing multi-factor authentication (MFA) for all staff and students, among other measures.
