A South Kerry councillor has claimed that 'some fella in the TII' needs to be jailed if someone is killed at Foilmore National School.
Independent councillor Johnny Healy-Rae was expressing his frustration at what he perceived as Transport Infrastructure Ireland's(TII) tardiness implementing traffic calming measures at the school.
As it lies on the N70 Ring of Kerry road, it is the responsibility of TII and not Kerry County Council.
Cllr Healy-Rae said Foilmore is a very busy school and busy spot, but branded the lights there 'a disaster'.
He said locals had pushed for them for three years, but said they are now twelve hours out of sync, meaning they flash at night time instead of at pupil arrival and departure times.
He called on Kerry County Council and TII to repair them.
The councillor also called for proper traffic calming measures such as rumble strips to be installed, as there is a history of accidents there.
He added that you couldn't do too much.
Cllr Healy-Rae compared it with Cahir National School in Kenmare, which is on a secondary route, but has had ample safety measures installed by the council.
Meanwhile, Kenmare MD cathaoirleach, Norma Moriarty called for 'slow down' signs to be painted onto the road to alert people that they are approaching a school.
Kenmare MD management agreed to follow up with the appropriate TII appointed maintenance company.
