If the Government wants to reduce the number of polluting septic tanks, then it needs to bring in a grant system similar to that which makes homes more energy efficient.
That's according to Ken Lannery of Sepcon, a company which makes and installs sewage treatment systems.
A report from the Environmental Protection Agency shows 56% of septic tanks nationally failed inspections last year; in Kerry, the figure was 40%.
Mr Lannery says it's very difficult to get grants to upgrade septic tanks, describing it as a septic tank lottery.
