Average primary school classroom in Kerry had 18 pupils last year

The average primary school classroom in Kerry last year had just over 18 (18.28) pupils.

Department of Education figures shows enrolments in primary schools nationwide have been dropping for the past decade, with the national average class size now at 22.2 children per class.

Nationally, Kildare schools had the biggest average classes, while the smallest were in Longford.

Listowel Presentation Primary had the biggest average class size in Kerry at nearly 28 (27.71) pupils per classroom.

This was followed by Ardfert Central National School at over 27 (27.25), and St. Finian's National School in Waterville at 26.75.

The two Kerry primary schools with the smallest class sizes in the 2024/2024 school year, Ballymacelligott National School in Flemby and Scoil Mhuire gan Smál in Lixnaw, did not reopen this September.

They both had only one pupil per class.

That leaves Scoil Chríost Rí in Drumnacurra, Lenamore National School, and Scoil Chaitlín Naofa, in Kilvickadownig (Cill Mhic a' Domhnaigh) as the Kerry primary schools with the smallest average class sizes.

They averaged eight, seven and five pupils per classroom respectively.
