A decision by Kerry County Council to grant permission for an asphalt plant off the Tralee-Castleisland road has been appealed.

Asphalt is used as a surface material in the construction of roads, car parks, airport runways and more.

In April, planners granted permission, subject to 15 conditions, to Roadstone Limited to erect and operate an asphalt plant with a 20-metre stack and associated storage totalling 980-square metres at the existing quarry at Ballyegan.

Concerns have been raised by objectors about possible environmental, health and economic impacts of the development.

Paula and Oswald Luck, Ballyegan Community Protection Group and Patrick Foran have appealed the decision to An Bord Pleanála with a decision due by September 20th.
