The ASTI secondary school teachers’ annual convention is due to start today.
ASTI president Donal Cremin from Rathmore, and Minister for Education and Youth Helen McEntee are among those due to address the convention later today.
The event will be held in the Gleneagle INEC, Killarney and will run until this Thursday April 24th.
Concerns being raised include uncertainty about use of AI in Leaving Cert project work, teacher shortages, and resources for students with additional needs.
Around 500 secondary school teachers will attend todays conference.
This year’s convention will hear that schools and the education system are not equipped to effectively implement the Senior Cycle redevelopment programme.
Teachers will raise concerns over the lack of resources to fully deliver an inclusive education services to those with additional needs.
Delegates will call for the allocation of an Additional Needs Co-ordinator to every school, with the aim of supporting schools and teachers to meet the needs of all students.
Insufficient training for teachers and uncertainty about the use of Artificial Intelligence in Leaving Cert project work will also be raised.
Teacher shortages will once again feature, with motions on the length of the teachers’ pay scale, the lack of opportunities for career progression, and the need for incentives to attract and retain teachers.
It comes as the Minister for Education announced new measures yesterday to allow newly qualified teachers to get a permanent contract within a year.
